Pet Therapy

“I can’t have an animal in my apartment in NYC, but the city is really tough sometimes. I really miss my pet and the comfort it brings when I’m with it- I want to relive those relaxing moments when I’m interacting with my pet.”

Inspired by the common concern from our students, we design an relaxing VR experience which involve pets. Though it could be interacted on touchscreens, the experience is best interacted through a 360° VR headset.

Created by J Ma, Xie Peng, Tasneem Norris, and Sky Ta.

Prototypes & User testing:

Following video and pictures are recorded at the exhibition of Immersive Storytelling department.

User interacting with touchscreen

Observations:

  • Audience couldn’t understand what they are supposed to do when handed the devices.

  • .They really enjoy the perspective with the pets being up close and intimate with the camera.

  • Once being in the headset, to communicate instruction is extremely difficult.

Speculations:

  • Hearing audios will be affected by nearby projects in the exhibition.

  • People might move around and disconnect devices when interacting.

  • VR headsets could stop working mid exhibition.

Creative Decisions:

  • Have written step-by-step instruction.

  • Design stickers so audience can leave with a positive memory about our project (enhance the intimacy of the project).

  • Resize title card at the beginning of the video.

  • Adding headphones to accompany the VR headset.

  • Adding chairs in front of the project’s table.

  • Having touchscreen and headsets go hand-in-hand in the final set so at least once device is working.
